Pros: everything is pretty much free. Drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, snacks, a prepared meal, et cetera. Also, having a single seat means I get a window and the aisle, so I can poop whenever I want and still get a good view. There’s also club soda, which as I have said before is a sign of being so fancy .

Cons: the conductor has decided that I should be the only person briefed on emergency door opening procedure, meaning I am the only thing preventing fiery death of those in this train car in case of an incident.

Overall, 10/10 worth it.

Yeah! My friend once made it through two bottles of wine before they cut her off.

I can’t really blame them.

I’ve never taken Via. How much for a round-trip ticket in business class to wherever you’re going (I’m assuming Toronto or Montreal since I think you’re from Ottawa)? I’ve taken upper-class trains in France before which was a similar experience to what you mentioned.

On a similar note, I always liked that Porter gives you drinks/snacks as part of your flight but the Ottawa-Toronto trip is so quick that I can't finish any more than two beers.

No clue. The cars are Bombardier LRCs, but in terms of locomotive, I have no clue.

In Canada and New York City (which is really a part of Canada pretending to be part of the USA), we not only have trains, but subways, streetcars and buses too!

I managed to snag a business class ticket for about $115 for Ottawa-Toronto after a discount. Round trip on an Ottawa-Toronto route? The cheapest I think you could score without discount would probably be... $250, I think?

I flew Porter once. It was okay, but Billy Bishop in Toronto was absolutely terrible. I am so glad they got rid of the ferry. Don’t think I’d take the plane again, though, unless I was really worried about time.

That’s not too bad considering flight costs. The Porter flights I took were actually to go to Windsor so I’ve never actually left the Billy Bishop airport to get into the city. I like the fact that basic refreshments are just included at the airport lounges, but I’d definitely be okay spending a little extra time for such a pleasant train ride. Now that I have some family in Toronto it’ll be a nice option. Do they have Wi-Fi/power outlets as standard in Via trains as well?

Sure do! Although no YouTube or video stuff (minus the included CBC shows) are allowed due to kind of slow internet. Plugs all over the place, although mine isn’t currently working (although that is a one-off problem I’ve never had before).

Honestly, I think the train is the way to go for this trip if you’re not driving. Because buses suck and you’ll be paying at least $140 for a one-way flight, and the cheapest train tickets can be had for as low as $50.

That’s because you kept demanding “bathtub boozeahol” and “the shit that’ll make me blind if I drink enough”.

Depends on how long she would be on the train. I mean, it’s not like you are going anywhere fast...

(Offer only valid eastbound from Vancouver)

Ottawa to Toronto. Or vice-versa. So about a four and a half hour trip without delays.

A train ride from Vancouver to Toronto? That would need way more than two bottles.

I have yet to travel Via, but I fully intend to go 1st when I finally do.

Because getting a view plus easy access to the toilet is like a dream come true!

Highly recommend. I would probably wait until your kids are a little older if you were to make it a family trip, though.

Absolutely. My aunt and uncle did the Toronto-Quebec trip a few years ago w/my cousins, all about 8+ years old. Was a most excellent trip for them all.

Well, for the couple thousand dollars Via Rail charges for the Vancouver to Toronto leg in a sleeping car...

You might want a whole case of whiskey so you can actually sleep.
